Dr Ravindra Mohan obtained his MBBS degree from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He underwent residency training in ophthalmology at the Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS, New Delhi. During his period of training, he held many leadership positions including those of Vice-President and President of the Student’s Union, Joint Secretary and later, Secretary of the Ophthalmic Research Association. After residency training, he was Senior Resident in the division of Oculoplasty, Orbital Surgery and Pediatric Ophthalmology for 3 years He passed the Fellowship examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Ophthalmology, clearing the Primary at Edinburgh, U.K. in December 1997 and the final at Edinburgh in May 1998 He joined Sankara Nethralaya,rated as a top eye hospital in the country, as a consultant in October 1998, and is presently Senior Consultant and Director, Department of Oculoplasty, Orbital Surgery and Trauma. In August 2005, he was appointed Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Deemed University, Chennai.He is the Secretary of the Oculoplasty Association of India .He has been Honorary Surgeon to the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

He has attended more than 50 professional meetings including as Chairperson & Moderator, both at the national and international level including the International Congress of Ophthalmology, International Congress of Ocular Oncology & Singapore National Eye Centre Meeting. He has over 60 paper presentations and 20 poster and video presentations to his credit.He has delivered over 30 invited talks in various fora in different parts of the country and abroad. He has been involved in public education on various aspects of eye care on television.

He has authored chapters in textbooks and has over two dozen publications to his credit,including those in prestigious journals like Survey of Ophthalmology,Eye,Orbit,Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery,and the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology. He has been the recipient of the prest.igious International Young Scientists Travel Grant of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1994.He was awarded, and delivered the Shyam Sunder Prasad Endowment Award Lecture at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Hyderabad in July 2006. Dr Ravindra Mohan is a reviewer for the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology and Asian Journal of Ophthalmology, an abstract reviewer for the All India Ophthalmological Society and an invited paper discussant for the Annual Conference of the All India Ophthalmological Society. Dr Mohan has been closely associated with the activities of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in India, including in the conduct of the FRCS examinations.He was a co-ordinator of the Indo-Israel Ophthalmic Meeting held in Chennai in December 2005.

Dr.Mohan has many firsts to his credit.He started India’s first superspeciality Thyroid Eye Clinic at Sankara Nethralaya for the comprehensive treatment of this complex , potentially blinding and disfiguring disease.He also established the country’s first Minimally Invasive Lacrimal Clinic and introduced the procedure of Balloon Dacryoplasty for the management of watery eyes in children and adults.

His areas of continued interest in addition to high performance state of the art cataract surgery include comprehensive management of thyroid eye disease,endoscopic lacrimal and orbital surgery, cosmetic and aesthetic eyelid surgery especially ptosis surgery, orbital tumours, cosmetic rehabilitation of the anophthalmic socket, as also the classification and repair of eyelids and adnexal injuries.
